Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, evaluation, prevention and treatment of diseases and injuries affecting the musculoskeletal and neurological system.
The primary goal of this specialty is the restoration of a person’s functional ability through rehabilitation, which is the process of helping a person achieve the highest possible level of functional ability, independence and quality of life.
Rehabilitation medicine is designed to meet the specific needs of each individual, so each program is different.
BSI has a complete Rehabilitation unit for the service and individualised treatment of patients with spinal injuries and conditions, developing a personalised programme for each one of them.
Our work philosophy focuses on achieving functional recovery from spinal injuries in the shortest possible time so that the patient can resume their daily activities, accompanying them and offering them the information they need at all times.
Our objectives are:
- Improved mobility and physical functionality.
Pain control. - Development of the skills necessary for activities of daily living.
- Use of adaptive technologies to facilitate work at home and at work.
- Detection and support for psychological and social problems that may appear during the rehabilitation process.
Specialists in this discipline are experts in the muscular, skeletal and neurological conditions that limit a patient’s quality of life.
During the visit, the Rehabilitator exhaustively collects the patient’s symptoms, carries out a detailed physical examination and, if necessary, requests diagnostic tests.
This process leads to the development of a personalised treatment plan that may include therapeutic exercise, different physical therapies (e.g. magnetotherapy, TENS,…), specific medications, infiltrations and/or referral to the surgical specialists of our team.
At BSI, as a multidisciplinary unit for the management of all spinal pathology, we work in collaboration with the other healthcare professionals on the team, with the spinal surgeons, jointly assessing the most complex cases, and above all, with the other healthcare professionals specialising in physiotherapy, osteopathy, acupuncture and pain psychology. All this to ensure that the patient receives the best possible and most appropriate treatment for their ailment and condition.
Some of the ways we can help patients with chronic spinal pathology include:
- Relieving pain and inflammation through the use of medication and physical therapies such as electrotherapy and manual therapy.
- Improving mobility and flexibility through stretching and strengthening exercises.
- Teaching pain management techniques and coping strategies to help patients deal with chronic pain.
- Providing advice on lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and posture improvement, to reduce pressure on the spine.
- Infiltrations and minimally invasive outpatient therapies.
