Spine surgery

Dr. Jesús LafuenteAfter graduating in Medicine and Surgery in Barcelona in 1992 from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, he spent the next twelve years living in the United Kingdom where, in addition to working as an assistant doctor in various hospitals, he trained as a neurosurgeon and specialised in Neurosurgery. It was there that he wrote his doctoral thesis on the first cervical disc prosthesis.

In 2003, at the Congress of the European Society of Cervical Spine Research (CSRS) he was awarded the “Mario Boni Prize” for the best research paper.

From 2005 to 2008, he worked as an assistant doctor at the Hospital Josep Trueta, contributing to the continuity of neurosurgical endoscopy, comprehensive spine treatment, skull base, and paediatric neurosurgical oncology treatment.

Since 2007 he has been a member of the faculty of the “EANS”. European Association of Neurosurgical Societies which he combines with his position as Spanish delegate of the Spine section of the same organisation. Since 2017 he is the president of the European Neurosurgical Society (EANS), as well as of the Societat Catalana de Neurocirurgia. He is also currently vice-president of the Spanish Neurosurgery societies and of the world federation, being also the representative of this international society in the G4 alliance.

He has published more than 30 national and international publications, as well as being the author of several chapters in 12 books specialising in spine and brain pathology.

He works in the Spine Unit of the Hospital Quirónsalud Barcelona (Barcelona Spine Institute – BSI), and is the director of the Spine Unit at the Hospital del Mar, Barcelona.

Treatment of pituitary malformation tumours, skull base surgery, cerebral endoscopy, Arnold Chiari pathology, syringomyelia, cervical and lumbar disc herniation, minimally invasive spine surgery, and complex spine surgery.
