Coxygodynia
Coccygodynia or pain of sacro-coccygeal and coccygeal origin
Coccygodynia, commonly called sacral or coccyx pain, is a fairly rare and little known condition that causes pain in the lowest part of the spine and coccyx.
The pain is usually worse with sitting, getting up, increased pressure on the area and constipation. It is usually caused by major or unnoticed trauma, or after childbirth, rarely by infections or tumors that cause irritation, dislocation or inflammation of the joint between the sacrum and the coccyx or between the four coccygeal vertebrae.
Conservative treatment of coccygodynia consists of anti-inflammatory drugs, postural hygiene measures to avoid pressure in the area (use of a custom-made pillow, avoid constipation with a diet rich in fiber and water), and vertebral manipulations.
If conservative treatment fails, your specialist may resort to ultrasound-guided blockade of the sacrococcygeal joint and the ganglion impar, a group of nerve cells responsible for the sensitivity of the area located in front of the joint itself, which is reached by passing the needle through it.
In this infiltration, a mixture of anesthetics and corticoids is used to achieve an analgesic effect that can last for months or even years.
