Dr. Ferran Pellisé

An international reference

Specialist in scoliosis surgery and spinal pathologies.

Dr. Ferran Pellisé - Director - Barcelona Spine InstituteDr. Ferran Pellisé has more than 25 years of complete dedication to the surgical treatment of spinal pathologies and, in particular, scoliosis and other conditions that cause changes in the morphology of the trunk, for which he is an international reference.

He received his doctorate cum laude as an orthopaedic surgeon from the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona in 1994. Since 2014 he has been Head of the Spine Unit at the same hospital, and head of the Spine Research Unit at the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR). He has been coordinator of the Research Area in Surgery at VHIR and member of its Scientific Committee. He is also Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since 2021.

In 2007 he created and directed the Columna Pellisé unit, the seed of the Barcelona Spine Institute (BSI), founded in 2017 also in the framework of the Hospital Quirónsalud Barcelona, belonging to the leading hospital group in healthcare provision and quality care in our country. Barcelona Spine Institute (BSI) was created by Dr. Pellisé with the aim of creating a multidisciplinary team with the highest medical training, which would provide a response to all spinal pathology, from the simplest to the most complex, at all stages of life.

Internationally recognised

Internationally recognised, Dr. Pellisé is a benchmark in the application of artificial intelligence to spine surgery: back in 2011 he founded the European Spine Study Group (ESSG) together with other renowned researchers and today the ESSG is considered the main platform for the analysis and evaluation of adult scoliosis in Europe. The study of the data allows for better decision making regarding the need for scoliosis surgery, its prevention and subsequent follow-up.

In addition, Dr. Ferran Pellisé is a regular reviewer of the highest impact journals in the speciality and has been deputy editor of the European Spine Journal and, until today, a member of its Advisory Board. He is an expert advisor to the National Agency for Evaluation and Prospective (ANEP) of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness; and has been a member of the Boards of Directors of several Spanish and foreign medical associations dedicated to spinal diseases, including the Spanish Spine Society-GEER (President), the Spine Society of Europe (President) and the Scoliosis Research Society (Director at large and Secretary). In the latter case, it is the first time that a non-North American has held this position in the 50-year history of this organisation.
